Half Moon is mindful of the importance of sustaining the environment for the benefit of citizens, guests and future generations. We are committed to the protection and preservation of our environment and endeavour to incorporate as best as possible those practices that will achieve those objectives.
A Green Globe certified resort, we have a dedicated team of staff volunteers headed by our Environmental Manager whose mission is to spearhead, maintain, teach and institute environmental best practices both at the resort and in designated local communities. In addition to managing the resort’s environmental programme, the team identifies environmental risks, records and monitors environmental impacts and implements environmental and sustainability measures.
Some of our environmental and sustainability practices include:
•Towel re-use programme that recycles old towels into wash rags for cleaning
•Saw dust from the on-site woodwork shop used for horse bedding at the Equestrian Centre
•Horse manure from Equestrian Centre used to condition soil in nursery and gardens
•Waste oil sent to factories to be used in manufacturing poultry feed
•Low energy light bulbs used throughout the resort
•Guests invited to re-use linens and turn off lights and air conditioning when not in use
•Purchasing produce and foods from local suppliers and an organic herbal garden used by our chefs in their delectable meals
•Employing staff from local communities
•Participating in practical training programmes with local high schools, universities and training programmes
•Conducting community-outreach programme with local elementary school, the Salvation Army and area children’s home
Half Moon’s eco-friendly operations go hand-in-hand with its community outreach programmes that are supported equally by management and staff. In the last few years, Half Moon completed several environmental projects that allowed guests and staff to give back to local communities whether through donating time, goods or money to local programmes.
Pack for a Purpose
The Pack for a Purpose programme gives travellers the opportunity to contribute to the needs of the less fortunate children in the countries they visit. Half Moon is partnering with the neighbouring Barrett Town All-Age School and invites you to join the mission to assist the over 300 students between the ages of six and 14 enrolled at the school. The current staff population of 13 teachers welcomes donations of school supplies that would include notebooks, pencils pens, erasers, crayons, rulers etc. View instructions on "How to Pack for a Purpose".
Guest Dollar Donation Programme
In April 2011, Half Moon initiated the Guest Dollar Donation Programme where guests visiting the resort were invited to donate US$1 per room, per night to implement a mooring buoy system deployment at the Montego Bay Marine Park Trust. The Trust, which has been operating for over 20 years, Is responsible for implementing measures to protect and restore a healthy eco-system in the resort town of Montego Bay.
